Ask any luxury travel consultant what the most common client question is and you'll get a consistent answer: "Should we do the Maldives or Bora Bora?" Both promise the same dream — an overwater bungalow above impossible-blue water — but they deliver very different experiences.
The Maldives: Flat, Remote, Pure
The Maldives is 1,200 coral islands at or barely above sea level. There are no mountains, no rivers, no forests in the conventional sense — just sand, coral, and water. Each resort occupies its own private island; you'll rarely see another hotel.
Getting there: Long-haul from most of the world (11+ hours from London/New York), then a 30-minute seaplane transfer.
Best for: Total seclusion, underwater experiences, honeymooners who want zero distractions.
Bora Bora: Mountain, Lagoon, Character
Bora Bora has Mount Otemanu — a dramatic extinct volcano rising 727 metres from the lagoon. The combination of mountain backdrop and turquoise water creates a more visually dynamic landscape than the Maldives.
Getting there: Via Papeete (Tahiti) — typically requires a connection through Los Angeles.
Best for: Couples who want dramatic scenery, a sense of place, and Polynesian culture.

- Choose Maldives if you want the purest overwater experience, the best snorkelling/diving, and total resort-island seclusion.
- Choose Bora Bora if you want dramatic volcanic scenery alongside the lagoon.
