Koh Adang is Koh Lipe's undeveloped national park neighbour — pristine snorkeling reefs, a freshwater waterfall, panoramic viewpoints, and dense jungle just 10 minutes by longtail from Lipe's overwater bungalows. Our guide covers why Koh Adang is the perfect day trip from Koh Lipe.
Koh Adang: Koh Lipe's Wild Neighbour
Koh Adang is a large, jungle-covered island directly adjacent to Koh Lipe in the Tarutao National Marine Park — separated by a 1km channel. While Koh Lipe has developed into a proper tourist destination with overwater bungalows and restaurants, Koh Adang remains entirely undeveloped: dense jungle, a single national park bungalow facility, and some of the finest snorkeling in the Tarutao archipelago.
Koh Adang is best visited as a day trip from Koh Lipe — the 10-minute longtail ride brings you to a completely different world. The island's west coast has excellent snorkeling reefs, a freshwater waterfall (Chado Cliff), and viewpoints over the surrounding islands.

Why Visit Koh Adang
Snorkeling
The reefs on Koh Adang's west coast are among the finest in the Tarutao archipelago — healthy coral, abundant fish, and regular sea turtle sightings. The snorkeling is accessible directly from the beach without a boat. Visibility averages 15–20m during the dry season.
Chado Cliff Waterfall
A 30-minute jungle hike from the beach leads to Chado Cliff — a freshwater waterfall with a natural pool. The hike passes through dense jungle with hornbills and monitor lizards. Swimming in the pool after the hike is refreshing.
Viewpoint
A 45-minute hike to the island's viewpoint offers panoramic views over Koh Lipe, the surrounding islands, and the Andaman Sea toward Malaysia. One of the finest viewpoints in the Tarutao archipelago.
Genuine Wilderness
Koh Adang's national park status means no development — the jungle is primary forest, the beaches are empty, and the only sounds are birds and waves. A stark contrast to Koh Lipe's Walking Street 1km away.
Getting to Koh Adang
- From Koh Lipe: 10-minute longtail boat ($3–$5 per person). Longtails run throughout the day.
- From Pak Bara pier: 2-hour speedboat (same boat as Koh Lipe, stop at Adang on request).
Important : Koh Adang closes approximately June–October with the rest of Tarutao National Park.
Best Time to Visit
- November–May: Park open, dry season, calm seas, best snorkeling.
- June–October: Park closed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I stay on Koh Adang or Koh Lipe?
For most travelers, stay on Koh Lipe (better accommodation, restaurants, overwater bungalows) and day trip to Koh Adang. The national park bungalows on Adang are basic — only choose them if you specifically want the wilderness experience and don't mind simple facilities.
Is the snorkeling better on Koh Adang or Koh Lipe?
Both are excellent. Koh Lipe's house reefs (particularly Sunrise Beach) are very good. Koh Adang's west coast reefs are slightly less visited and arguably in better condition. For the best snorkeling in the area, combine both.
Is the hike to the viewpoint difficult?
Moderate — 45 minutes each way on a marked trail. Wear proper shoes (not flip-flops), bring water, and start early to avoid the midday heat. The trail is steep in places but well-maintained.
