Best Time to Visit Koh Lanta 2026: Month-by-Month Weather Guide

LuxStay Editorial·April 5, 2026·9 min read

Month-by-month guide to Koh Lanta weather, diving season, beach conditions, and when to visit for the best experience on this laid-back Thai island.

Koh Lanta is one of Thailand's most underrated islands — quieter than Phuket and Koh Samui, with long beaches, excellent diving, and a relaxed atmosphere. But Koh Lanta has a pronounced seasonal pattern: the island essentially closes from May to October when the southwest monsoon makes the west-facing beaches rough and many resorts shut down.

Koh Lanta's Seasons

High season (November–April): Northeast monsoon brings calm seas, clear skies, and ideal beach and diving conditions. Most resorts open November 1.

Low season (May–October): Southwest monsoon brings heavy rain, rough seas, and strong winds on the west coast. Most resorts and restaurants close. The island is very quiet.

Key fact: Koh Lanta faces west — it gets the full force of the southwest monsoon. This is more pronounced than on Koh Samui (which faces east) or Phuket (which has some east-coast shelter).

Month-by-Month Breakdown

November: Season Opens — Best Value

Weather: 27–31°C, decreasing rain, seas calming

Crowds: Low (building through month)

Hotel rates: Shoulder (60–75% of peak)

Diving: Good, improving

November 1 marks the official start of Koh Lanta's season. Early November can still see occasional rain, but conditions improve rapidly. By mid-November, the beaches are reliably sunny and the sea is calm. This is one of the best-value months — near-peak conditions at well below peak prices.

Best for: Value travellers, divers, those wanting a quiet island experience.

December–January: Peak Season

Weather: 26–30°C, minimal rain, calm seas

Crowds: High (Christmas/New Year very high)

Hotel rates: Peak

Diving: Excellent — 20–25m visibility

December and January are Koh Lanta's finest months. Long Beach (Klong Dao) and Klong Nin Beach are at their best — calm turquoise water, clear skies, and warm temperatures. Christmas and New Year see the highest prices and most visitors. Book 2–3 months ahead for this period.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, families, beach holidays.

February–March: Peak Season Continues

Weather: 27–31°C, minimal rain, calmest seas

Crowds: High (softening in March)

Hotel rates: High (softening in March)

Diving: Best of the year

February and March maintain excellent conditions. March is particularly good — crowds thin from the January–February peak, prices soften slightly, and conditions remain perfect. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang (Koh Lanta's famous deep-water dive sites) are at their best in March–April.

Best for: Divers, couples, those wanting peak conditions with slightly fewer crowds.

April: Late Season Sweet Spot

Weather: 28–33°C, minimal rain, calm seas

Crowds: Low-moderate

Hotel rates: Low-moderate

Diving: Excellent (Hin Daeng/Hin Muang peak)

April is Koh Lanta's hidden gem month. Most package tourists have left, prices drop significantly, and conditions remain excellent. The heat is real (32–33°C midday) but the sea is refreshing. Songkran (Thai New Year, 13–15 April) brings some domestic visitors but Koh Lanta is quieter than Phuket or Bangkok during this period.

Best for: Budget-conscious travellers wanting excellent conditions, divers targeting Hin Daeng/Hin Muang.

May–October: Low Season

Weather: 26–32°C, heavy rain, rough seas

Crowds: Very low

Hotel rates: Very low (most resorts closed)

Diving: Not recommended (rough seas)

The southwest monsoon arrives in May. Most resorts close by mid-May. The west-facing beaches are rough and swimming is not safe. A handful of resorts stay open year-round, but the island is a shadow of its high-season self.

Exception: The east coast (Old Town area) is more sheltered and remains pleasant even in low season.

Diving in Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is one of Thailand's best diving bases:

  • Hin Daeng & Hin Muang: Deep-water pinnacles with manta rays, whale sharks (March–May), and exceptional pelagic life. Among the best dives in Southeast Asia.
  • Koh Haa: Five limestone islands with caves, swim-throughs, and excellent macro life. Suitable for all levels.
  • Koh Rok: Marine national park with pristine coral and excellent snorkelling.

Best diving months: February–April (peak visibility, manta ray and whale shark season at Hin Daeng).
